300033, 306684
Harold F. Breit dedicated 33 years (8 as a math teacher and 25 as an elementary principal) to the betterment of public education for his community and all those impacted by it. It is in this spirit that this scholarship has been established.

Harold graduated from Mayville High School and UW-Oshkosh where he majored in education. This schooling, in combination with life experiences, served as the foundation for his passion for education, sense of integrity, and commitment to the community. He believed that a person’s values were best demonstrated through their actions; by what they did, not what they said. This was proven by his dedication to family, loyalty to lifelong friends, and active involvement in many community causes and organizations. His actions as an educator supported his deep personal belief that it was his responsibility to assure that the best interest of the kids, teachers, and school were always paramount; that “politics” would not supersede “doing the right thing.”

Harold enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and “the old guys,” doing whatever he could to help enrich their lives. He loved to laugh and make others laugh, having a pun for every situation.

Harold enjoyed 15 years of retirement.  Much of that time was spent taking a lazy afternoon float in the pool in Florida or at his cabin in the north woods where he enjoyed the quiet and solitude of life without “too much noise.” He enjoyed reading and all things in nature, whether it was feeding the birds, fishing, hunting, four wheeling, or simply looking out at the lake.

After his death, one of his former students sent the following condolence, “I don’t remember all of my teachers but I certainly remember ‘Mr. Breit’ as a kind but demanding and caring teacher. It was important to him that we learned the lessons he taught.  He was a positive influence not only on me, but I’m sure on all of his students." This is proof of the importance educators play in shaping the lives of all of us.

Two $500 scholarships will be offered, one to a graduate of Fond du Lac High School and another to a graduate of Mayville High School.

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the following criteria:
A. Entering senior year or in senior year status pursuing baccalaureate degree in education
B. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a four-point scale verified by certified college transcript
C. Declared major in the field of education
D. Financial need
E. Clear demonstration of a passion for teaching “Position passionate personality”
F. Personal statements answering the following questions:
     a. Why are you pursuing a degree in education and what do you hope to accomplish in this chosen field?
     b. Describe your need for financial assistance to finish your degree.
     c. Describe how you demonstrate your passion for helping others and for the field of education.

Jim & Mary Gescheidle Scholarship

300027
The Jim Gescheidle Scholarship Fund was established by Mary Gescheidle in memory of her husband, Jim, who was killed in a plane accident on November 4, 2002. The life Jim led and shared with others is the reason this scholarship exists today.  Jim believed in encouraging people to challenge themselves, something he himself did every day. He never settled for anything which he knew could be made better with some extra work. He lovingly lived his senses. His sense of duty led him to serve in the U.S. Army in France. His sense of community led him to Big Brothers/Big Sisters where he and his wife, Mary, both served as a Big Couple for 21 years, supporting their commitment to making a child’s life better. Mary and Jim belonged to many organizations, including the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs and the NASCAR racing circuit. On April 1, 1986 Mary and Jim were awarded the Exchange Club Good Deeds Award. This award recognizes dedicated volunteers who give endless hours of their time and talents toward making their communities better places to live.

Mary Gescheidle passed away unexpectedly on December 17, 2013. At that time the scholarship was renamed the Jim & Mary Gescheidle Scholarship. Mary helped throughout the Fond du Lac School District from 2004-2008. In 2008 she was hired to work full time for the School Health and Safety Program, Comprehensive Service Integration (CS), and Drug Free Communities. Mary was not only dedicated to her work but committed to the vision and mission of the program which was to support the physical, social, and emotional needs of children.

Mary and Jim loved family, friends, Disney, and life itself. Mary's untimely death weighs heavily on all the lives she has touched. Her passing was made easier knowing she was reunited with the love of her life!

Jim Gescheidle Custodial Scholarship

His sense of community led him to Big Brothers/Big Sisters where he and his wife, Mary, served as a Big Couple for 21 years, supporting his commitment to making a child’s life better. His sense of leadership guided him to lead many organizations, including the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs. His sense of enthusiasm and sport led him to immerse himself in the NASCAR racing circuit. His desire for challenge led him to help create a state-of-the-art high school facility in Fond du Lac, making it one of the finest school districts in the United States.

He imposed no barriers in his mind, nor in his life. He was happy to learn from anyone who would teach him. He never saw others as barriers or opponents, but as collaborators, team members, and soon-to-be friends. He treated all people with respect and a rare genuineness that was impossible not to feel when you were near him.

In the end, this scholarship was created to encourage others to live in the spirit that Jim did; to live life without barriers, to conquer new challenges, and to make a difference. Jim's life traveled many roads, made many friends, and touched many hearts. For those who knew and loved him, he will be greatly missed. Thank you, Jim, for everything.

Her influence went far beyond the classroom to include student trips to France, French breakfasts for members of the administration, and even French dinners for the community with cultural vignettes by her students. The impact that she had can be seen in the number of her students who went on to study French in the future. College and university professors were always impressed with Madame's former students' abilities.

More important than his achievements and activities was Mike’s kind heart. He treated everyone with respect and was quick to share his dimpled smile and laugh to brighten the day of any and everyone he contacted. The signing of the organ donation portion of his driver’s license illustrates Mike’s caring nature and consideration for others. Nathan Manis Memorial Scholarship

300020, 300027
Nate Manis was a lifelong resident of Fond du Lac, and he wouldn’t have had it any other way. He loved his community and the community loved him right back. He had a strong commitment to his two passions: education and athletics. Nate was a proud University of Wisconsin alum, having graduated from UW-Madison Law School. As an active member of the UW Athletic Board and an avid golfer, he founded the state’s first Badger Day and was instrumental in encouraging local athletes to attend the University of Wisconsin.

Nate also supported education at home, and held a position on the FDL School Board from 1966-1978, serving two terms as its president. Five new schools were built during his tenure. Nate understood the value of education and promoted it, quietly helping many young people pursue higher education.

Above all, Nate was known for his kind heart, immense generosity, and unselfish desire to help others. With his booming voice and convivial nature, he made everyone feel at ease. He was a loyal friend, treating all who came his way with equality, dignity, and respect.

REQUIREMENTS
A. Exemplify kindness, decency, and a strong desire to help others without asking for anything in return.
B. Do community service, not because it’s a requirement for graduation or because it looks good on the college application, but because he/she has a heartfelt desire to make a difference.
C. Be a role model, encouraging peers, younger children and even adults to do the right thing for others.

We’re living in an age where decency and kindness continue to be in great demand, but in short supply. By giving from the heart, treating everyone equally, with dignity and respect, this deserving student could bring these values back and in doing so, would “pay it forward” for the future.
